Sunnah Beard Balm

I know, I’m a midwife. Why would I post a recipe on beard balm?  If I want to stay in business, I have to keep the beards looking good right?  This beard balm keeps beards moisturized and neat. It also smells amazing.  And if you use the optional sandalwood essential oil, it can even prevent gray hairs from forming in the beard!

What makes it sunnah?  The Prophet (peace be upon him), said, “Eat olive oil, and anoint yourselves with it, for it is from a blessed tree.”

This balm uses olive oil as a base, and then adds soothing shea and cocoa butters. The Prophet (peace be upon him) was known to use olive oil on his hair. So go ahead, make this balm for an Eid gift for the men in your life. Intend that you are helping them follow in the sunnah! What could be a better Eid gift than that?!

Olive oil – Olive oil is an emollient so it protects the hair shaft. It also contains antioxidants which prevent free radicals, and can help with premature graying and hair loss.

Shea butter – Shea butter comes from the nut of the African shea tree. It has been used since at least the time of Cleopatra for beautifying purposes. It has emollient properties, and is often used in conditioners for dry and brittle hair.

Cocoa butter – Cocoa butter is derived from the cocoa bean. It adds a subtle, delicious scent to the balm, as well as moisturizing properties.

Beeswax – Beeswax makes the hair look sleek and shiny. It is often an ingredient in mustache wax!

Essential oils – You can choose any oils that appeal to you. I chose rosemary because it is known to be good for thickening hair. It also has a nice woodsy smell. I added sandalwood because sandalwood retards the growth of gray hair!

This balm makes two, 2 ounce tins.  To use, just take a quarter size and soften between your palms. Smooth through beard.
